Columbia Sailing is a a student-run group.
Meet some of our dedicated student-sailors here!
Captain - David Treatman (GS/JTS '20)
David Treatman is ecstatic to be serving as one of CUST's two captains this year. David has served on the board since his freshman year, and is grateful to the team for pushing him to improve as a sailor. He grew up sailing a broken Sunfish with his father on Barnegat Bay, NJ, and has now competed in FJs and 420s against Columbia's biggest rivals. Last year David's experience with the team helped him get accepted as a volunteer crew member aboard a 100 year old tall ship for a transatlantic crossing. His favorite part of sailing at Columbia is teaching students who have never set foot in a boat how to sail and watching them go on to race - and win! When he is not sailing, David works in theatrical production, and studies history and talmud.
First Mate - Boaz Willis (JTS ‘22)
Boaz Willis grew up yachting on the sun-kissed shores of California with family and friends. He was ecstatic to arrive at Columbia and find a group of young individuals whom were similarly excited about channeling the power of nature and gaining new perspectives about the world through the art of sailing. If you can’t find Boaz on a boat or on the dock he’s most likely taken his surfboard out to the nearest break and hopped in. He is also the author of Hello, World! — a coffee table book for coders.
Treasurer - Meimei Cao (BC’22)
Secretary - Kyelee Fitts (CC '20)
Kyelee grew up as a military brat, spending seven years before Columbia stationed in Seoul, South Korea. An avid lover of both keeping fit and the outdoors, she started sailing fall of her sophomore year and quickly fell in love with the sport. She hopes to major in applied mathematics and enjoys reading, taking walks with Spotify, and finding new quotes to tack on her wall. Kyelee currently serves as the communications chair of the team.
Alumni Chair - Blaine Helleloid (BC '21)
Communications Chair - Zoe Chan (CC '22)
Zoe was born and raised in New York City and first learned how to sail Optis in the Hudson River. She joined CUST in her first semester at Columbia and it has since become an integral part of her college experience. Apart from sailing and spending time with the team, Zoe enjoys drawing, exploring the city, and running in Riverside Park.
Merchandise Chair - Ben Barth (CC’22)
Benjamin hails from the landlocked suburb of Teaneck, New Jersey, but spent his summers at the beautiful Jersey shore. Though not an avid sailor in his youth, Benjamin always had a love for the water and has seen exponential improvement in his sailing since joining CUST. In addition to his role as Merchandise Chair, Benjamin enjoys watching nature documentaries, doing activities in the city, and sleeping.
Social Chair - Doga Ozesmi (SEAS '20)
I am a junior in SEAS studying computer engineering. I grew up in Iowa and did not sail much until college.
